Kavarum Gaanam - Thiranurayum
a few months ago i watched Anandabhadram a supernatural thriller, directed by Santosh Sivan. this is his first movie in malayalam. Actors are Prithviraj, Manoj K Jayan, Kalabhavan Mani, Kavya Madhavan, Revathi & Riya Sen.
the story is based on a novel. Anandhan (Prithviraj) returns to his hometown from States to carry out his mother’s (Revathy) last wishes. There he meets people living in fear of Digambaran (Manoj K Jayan), a wizard. Digambaran uses Bhama (Riya Sen) for his evil wizardry and her blind brother Chemban (Kalabhavan Mani) could do nothing about it. Anandhan had to light the lamps at his mother’s family temple as her last wish but this would affect Digambaran’s years of effort to acquire Nagamanikkam. Digambaran enters Anandhan through Parakayaprevesham and even uses him for his evil deeds. Rest of the story deals with how Anandhan together with his lover Bhadra (Kavya) escapes from his grip and put an end to Digambaran’s witchery.
i must mention about manoj k jayan here. he is the screen-stealer. he has really lived as Digambaran. his make-up is very good.
given below is the link for the movie's website:

i enjoyed the movie. the songs are nice too. there's a song for Manoj K Jayan also. see his expressions. Dr KJY has sung this song beautifully. enjoy viewing this song:

Malarum Ninaivugal - Ore Naal
Hi friends,
i'm back after a long break. i've brought 'malarum ninaivugal' with me today.
Song - Ore Naal
Movie - Ilamai Oonjal Aadugirathu
Music by 'Maestro' Ilaiyaraja
Lyrics by Vaali
Singers - SPB & Vani Jayaram
i remember watching this movie when i was very young. i don't remember the story (but i read the review recently that it's a triangle love story).
these are the only things i remember about this movie. Super Star Rajni, Kalaignani Kamal, Sri Priya, Jaya Chitra and the songs. such lovely & beautiful songs. Ore Naal, Kinnathil Then Vadithu, Yennadi Meenachi, Nee Kettaal & Thanni Karuthudichu.
there's an interesting info on ore naal song. when Ilaiyaraja composed a tune for Sridhar's Ilamai Oonjal Aadugirathu, lalaa la lalaa la lalaala laa lala....instantly Kavingar Vaali filled with ore naal unai naan nilaavil paarthathu. Gangai Amaran who was near Ilaiyaraja ran to Kavingar Vaali, hugged & lifted him up which was a great credit to the great poet.
Our favourite 'paadum nila' spb has sung this song beautifully (as always he does). Vani also has done a good job, as usual.
here is the beautiful song. happy viewing.

Bollywood Pakkam - Chandramukhi speaks hindi
BHOOL BHULAIYAA
all of us know that the base of Chandramukhi is from Fazil's Manichitrathaazhu (malayalam). Mohanlal, Shobhana & Suresh Gopi acted in Manichitrataazhu, which was released in 1993 & became a super hit movie in malayalam. infact it's still one of the best movies i've watched in malayalam.
(i'll post an article on Manichitrathaazhu soon.)
a decade later director P. Vasu directed Aptha Mithra in Kannada, using Manichitrathaazhu's plot as base. Vishnuvardhan, Soundarya (late) & Ramesh Arvind acted in Aptha Mithra. it's was also dubbed as Nagavalli in Telugu. But unfortunately actress Soundarya died in a plane crash near bangalore on 17/04/2004. Aptha Mithra is the last movie she acted before her death.
i will say that Soundarya is one of the most beautiful actress i've seen. she can act very well too. she's still one of my favourite actress.
in 2005 P.Vasu remade Aptha Mithra in Tamil as Chandramukhi, with Rajnikanth, Jyothika & Prabhu in the lead. recently Rajni got Tamil Nadu's Best Actor award for 2005, for acting in Chandramukhi.
now comes Bhool Bhulaiyaa. using Manichitrathaazhu's plot as base director Priyadharshan has given us Bhool Bhulaiyaa. Actors are Akshay Kumar, Vidya Balan & Shiny Ahuja.

NAAN RASITHA PAADAL - SANJAARAM SEIYUM KANGAL
here is a new song which i like.
SONG : SANJAARAM
MOVIE : KANNAAMOOCHI YENADA
MUSIC BY YUVAN SHANKAR RAJA
SINGERS : SHANKAR MAHADEVAN & MADHUSHREE
ACTORS : SATHIYARAJ, PRITHVIRAJ, RATHIKA, SANDHYA & SRI PRIYA
DIRECTOR : PRIYA
Yuvan Shankar Raja has once again come up a beautiful romantic song. i will say that it's another experimental song of his. he has used shankar mahadevan & madhushree.
for a change shankar mahadevan has sung a melodious song. as for madhushree, all of us know that she has sung a number melodies. what surprised me is her tamil pronounciation. she has improved her pronounciation in this song.
well, i must say that all the songs in Kannaamoochi Yenada are nice in YSR's music. but my vote is for 'Sanjaaram, Andru Vanthathum & Megam'.
here is the Lyrics:
heyy sanjaaram seiyum kaNgaL ennilE saayum saayum

PUTHU PAADALGAL - POLLAADHAVAN, NAM NAADU & TAMIZH M.A.
MOVIE - POLLAADHAVAN
MUSIC BY GV PRAKASH, DINA & YOGI B
ACTORS - DHANUSH & RAMYA
Interestingly the rocking song in the album is the remix of the yesteryear hit number Engeyum Eppothum, remixed by popular Malaysian pop singer Yogi B.
The young and talented singer has come up with a scintillating and racy retune. Besides he also appears with Dhanush on the screen for the song.
Yogi is a household name in Malaysia and has come up with several hit albums. He expressed his delight when he was urged to remix the popular number for the album.
“Making a foray to Tamil cinema with such a big team is a delight”, he says.

RECIPE - PRATA & CHICKEN SALNA
salna (or chalna) is a famous side dish in madurai, usually served with prata or paratha. it's also famous in tenkasi.
whenever we stay in tenkasi, most of the time our breakfast is paratha & chicken or mutton salna. women there usually make paratha at home and they will prepare salna also. sometimes they also make idyiappam (puttu mayam) or thosai & serve with salna.
today i'll give you the recipe for prata & chicken salna.
PRATA
Ingredients
maida or plain flour (you may also use wheat or atta flour) - 4 cups
yogurt - 1/2 cup
salt - 1 tsp
baking soda - 1/4 tsp
egg (optional) - 1
cooking oil - 1/2 cup
warm water
Butter - small amt
Method
add salt, baking soda, oil, yogurt and egg to maida and mix them well. add warm water to the mix and keep stirring it to the consistency of chappati dough. cover the dough with damp cloth and let it sit for one hour.
create medim size balls from the dough. with 4 cups of flour you should be able to create at least 7 balls for a medium size prata.
on a large flat surface like your kitchen countertop, roll the ball as thin as possible. don't worry about the shape for now. start from the longest end. make a fold of about half inch toward the inner side. next, fold it again so that first fold doesn't goes inside but stays outside, in the shape of "W". continue to fold on the fashion to create "zipzag" fashion in terms of folding.
roll the zipzag pattern to come to the round shape as show above. set the pan in stove to medium heat. roll the dough in circle shape. apply some butter and put in the pan.
cook the prata on each side for about a minute until in reach light brownish color. take the cooked prata and place it on a plain surface. Smash the prata sideways to make it soft & fluffy.
serve hot with salna or other gravy.

RECIPE - BREAK FAST (BUKA PUASA)
thinking of what to do for breakfast this evening? we indian muslims will break fast with thosai, idli, murthabak, prata, idiyappam (puttu mayam) and etc. chaya (tea) is a must during break fast. in my house my mom makes lovely karupatti chaya or inji chaya. and she makes nice soft puttu also. she'll use rice flour or ragi flour. in singapore we usually take this with banana, ghee & red sugar. but whenever we go kerala, puttu is served with kadala curry or nenthrapazham (banana) and ghee.
it's always nice to start the breakfast with a dessert. today i'll give you 2 dessert recipes. Abok Abok Sago & Suji Kheer are my favourite desserts:
ABOK ABOK SAGO
Ingredients
100g pearl sago
150g gula Melaka, finely grated
150g castor sugar
1/2 tsp salt
1 tbsp pandan juice (blend three screwpine pandan leaves with a little water and squeeze out for juice)
A few drops green food colouring
250g grated white coconut
Method
Soak sago in cold water for 10-15 minutes. Wash under running tap to get rid of excess starch. Drain well in a metal strainer. Mix sago with grated white coconut, sugar and salt in a mixing bowl. Divide into two portions. To one portion, add pandan juice and green food colouring to mix. Add gula Melaka to the other portion. Grease a 10cm square baking tin lightly with corn oil. Spread the green portion on the base and press down firmly. Put into a steamer and steam for 10-12 minutes. Pour the gula Melaka portion over the steamed green portion and spread evenly. Press down firmly, then steam over boiling water for 20-25 minutes. Remove the tin from the steamer and leave aside to cool completely before cutting.

SOOJI KHEER
Ingredients
50 gms sooji
3 tblsp sugar
a pinch cardamom powder
Raisins (roasted in ghee)
Almonds (sliced & roasted in ghee)
cashew nuts (sliced & roasted in ghee)
200 ml Milk
2 tblsp ghee (or oil, the flavour is nice with ghee)
Method
Heat a fry pan on slow heat. Put the sooji (semolina) in it and dry roast it for few minutes, until it starts to change the colour. Add the ghee or oil and then mix it for 2 minutes. (the ghee can also be added in the beginning in step 2 along with sooji (semolina). But if you add the Ghee later then you can manage with less amount of ghee. Once done add the milk and mix it thoroughly so that there are no lumps. Add the sugar and mix. Add the raisins, almonds and cardomon powder. Serve hot.
Tips: It just takes 5 minutes to make this recipe and it is especially good on wintery days, it helps settle the dryness of throat, and relieves soar throat symptoms as well.

Many of us will have rice with curry during sahur. but most of us will have heartburn, indigestion & uneasy feeling after sahur. how to avoid these uncomfortable feelings?
here are some tips:
- don't sleep immediately after eating. i know some of them who'll sleep immediately after eating & they'll wake-up later to pray subuh. pls stay awake for a while to pray subuh & sleep. or some of us will not sleep after praying subuh. we will sit & do dhikir. then we will get ready to go to work.
- eat well balanced food. avoid taking rice with curry. try eating rice with light gravy, such as rasam, sambar or soup. make it simple as possible. i'll give some nice recipes later.
- drink plenty of plain water. try not to drink coffee or tea after eating. Tea makes you pass more urine taking with it valuable mineral salts that your body would need during the day. drinking fruit juices is also good.
- take more fruits & vegetables.
- avoid fried foods.
the above tips are also for breaking fast in the evening.

here i would like to give some infos about jayalalitha jayaram , one of my favourite heroines of 60's, as a movie star:
among the heroines of the 60's, jayalalitha has a special place. she has a very pretty face. i also like her style of acting & dancing. She was trained in Bharata Natyam and Carnatic Music from the young age of 4. She is said to be proficient in other dance-forms such as Mohini Attam, Kathak and Manipuri as well. Jayalalitha has given hundreds of performances in Bharatha Natyam and has even sung many songs herself in her films (songs are a staple of Indian films).
Jayalalitha is also well known for her Convent English.
the convent-educated jayalalitha made her debut in an English-language film, 'Epistle' over three decades ago. She was also in the lead in 'Izzat' - her only Hindi film - opposite Dharmendra.
She with her trimmed convent – educated English accent is known as a woman of letters. she has mentioned in an interview that when she was a child, she was very fond of Hans Christian Anderson, Grimms, Enid Blyton and the Malory Towers series, and later, Denise Robins, Barbara Cartland, Mills and Boon. Later on she graduated to the heavy stuff. she has read practically all the classics. her real favourite authors are Charles Dickens, Jane Austen and, among others, Oscar Wilde, Bernard Shaw, Sidney Sheldon, Danielle Steel, Pearl S Buck & James Hadley Chase.

LALETTAN HITS - PARAYAATHE ARIYAATHE
Recently i watched Udayananu Tharam (Udayan is the star). i enjoyed this movie. Lalettan as director Udaya Banu, Meena as actress Madhumathi, Sreenivasan as actor Saroj Kumar, & Mukesh as Producer Baby Kuttan. Bhavana is doing a guest role as actress Gayatri.
Udayananu Tharam is about a script writer cum assistant director, Udaya Banu, struggling to become director.
Hardworking, honest and good at heart he completes the script of a movie which he plans to make a hit to fulfill his lifetime dream. Baby Kuttan, a friend cum famous producer agrees to produce Udayan's film.
Rajappan Thengumoodu ( Sreenivasan), a junior artist comes to see Udayan and requests to stay with him for a few days. He was thrown out of his previous place because he couldn't pay for his accommodation. Udayan accommodates him as he didn't have the heart to say no. Once Rajappan knew that Udayan is on to his debut film, he wants to be his hero. But Udayan refuses. The scheming Rajappan steals Udayan's script and approaches a top producer with it and insists on becoming the hero.
The film becomes a super hit and Rajappan becomes famous. When Udayan comes to know about it he is shattered but couldn't do anything much about it. Rajappan changes his name to Saroj Kumar and gets himself trained in acting and dancing by Pachalam Bhasi (Jagathy Sreekumar).
Meanwhile Madhumati (Meena), a lead actress who was groomed by Udayan walks out of her house when she can't stand the suffering from her wicked brother and father into the comforting hands of Udayan who is much older to her. Udayan has to marry her to settle all the rumours but their relationship doesn't last long and Udayan becomes totally depressed.
But again Baby Kuttan comes to his rescue and encourages Udayan to come up with another script which he promises to produce. But he wants Saroj Kumar to be the hero. Although Udayan disagrees at first, he doesn't have much choice. The movie starts off but Saroj Kumar makes life miserable for Udayan whenever possible and walks out of the film when it is almost complete. The rest of the story deals with how Udayan tries to get his life back. How Udayan completes the film is interesting.
Sreenivasan writes about real life incidents that happen in the film industry and presents them in a humorous manner. He makes a dig at everyone, not even leaving the superstars. The director has handled the script well.
Mohanlal as Udayan presents a down to earth remarkable performance unlike the larger than life characters he plays these days. But it is Sreenivasan who steals the show as the dimwit obnoxious superstar Saroj Kumar. Meena is commendable as starlet Madhumati. The rest of the cast including Mukesh, Jagathy, Salim Kumar, Bhavana gives adequate support.
here is one of my favourite lalettan song:
here is another nice song from the same movie. a cute song featuring Meena & Sreenivasan:

CINEMA CINEMA - MOHANLAL & ASIN IN NINETEENTH STEP
Malayalam superstar Mohanlal is ready to start shooting for his new English movie titled Nineteenth Step. Bharat Bala is producing the film. MT Vasudevan Nair has written the films story. Bharat Bala himself is directing the film. Asin is acting opposite Mohanlal in the film. Nineteenth Step is both the actor and actresses first English film.
Earlier the director was interested in casting Kamalhasan as the hero and had approached him. It looks as if the veteran actor wasn't that keen on doing it. He therefore spoke to Malayalam superstar Mohanlal & he agreed.
The veteran was approached for the film and signed up for it on the condition that the films’ shooting is started only after six months. Asin to agreed to be apart of the project only after finishing the shooting of Ghajini and Vel. The other Malayalam superstar Mammotty too is acting in an English film playing the role of a doctor.

THIRUVONAM - DAY TEN
Thiruvonam Aashamsakal!
Today is the 10th the most important day of Onam.
The enchanting state of Kerala reverberates with the chants of Onaashamsakal, "To everyone, Onam Wishes" as people exchange warm greetings of the occasion on the tenth and the most important day of the carnival of Onam. People believe that it is on Thiru Onam that the spirit of legendary King Mahabali visits the state of Kerala. Activities begin early in the morning. People clean their house, take early bath, wear new clothes and participate in special prayers organised in individual homes and then in local temples. Later a very special and the biggest of all days Pookalam is prepared to welcome Maveli. Clay mounds in the shape of pyramids representing Lord Vishnu and Mahabali are prepared and placed in front of the Pookalam. In the noon the grand feast of Onam called Onasadya is prepared. The strictly vegetarian meal consists of 11 - 13 mandatory dishes and is served on a banana leaf. The eldest member of the family presents gifts and new clothes to the family members. Various cultural events are organised all over the state to mark the day. Dances, games, shows and get together are the other highlights of the day. Patassu (fire crackers) are also burnt to celebrate the occasion. There are some rituals also marked for the eleventh and twelfth day called Avittom and Chatayam or Chathayam respectively. But the major celebrations get over on the tenth and the most important day of Thiruvonam.
Once again ellaavarkum ente Ona Ashamshakal :)

ONAM - Part 3 - THIRUVONAM
Thiruvonam
The tenth and the most important day of Onam celebrations is known as Thiru Onam or the Tiru Onam. Here Thiru or Tiru stands for sacred, holy, beautiful or auspicious and is equivalent of 'Sri' in Hindi. It is so called as the day is the most significant of all, for the people of Kerala. People believe that it is on the tenth day that Lord Mahabali comes to visit his people. Some scholars say that the name Thiru Onam comes from the name Sravanotsav out of which 'Sra' was taken out and 'vana' was transformed to 'Onam'. To the word Onam, 'Thiru' was added as the asterism Sravana on which Onam is celebrated was sacred to Lord Vishnu. Elaborate preparations are made to celebrate Thiru Onam in the grandest possible way. Early in the morning people perform special prayers to invoke divine blessings. Women clean up the house and decorate a flower mat in the front courtyard of the house. This is to welcome the spirit of the legendary King who is so much appreciated by his people centuries after his golden reign. A grand meal called Onasadya is also prepared to impress upon the spirit of the King that his people are happy and wish him well. Thiru Onam evenings are spent playing games and indulging in cultural events. Lightening and dazzling display of fire also takes place with much fan fair.

ONAM - Part 2
Hi all,
here is some info on Pookalam:
Pookalam
Pookalam is an intricate and colourful arrangement of flowers laid on the floor. Tradition of decorating Pookalam is extremely popular in Kerala and is followed as a ritual in every household during ten-day-long Onam celebrations.
'Pookhalam' consists of two words, 'poov' meaning flower and 'kalam' means colour sketches on the ground. It is considered auspicious to prepare Pookalam, also known as 'Aththa-Poo' during the festival of Onam.
People believe the spirit of their dear King Mahabali visits Kerala at the time of Onam. Besides making several other arrangements, people, especially adolescent girls prepare elaborate Pookalams to welcome their most loved King.
Making of a Pookalam
Kilo and kilos of flowers, lot of dedication, creativity, technique and team effort are the basic essential of an eye catching Pookkalam.
Athapoovu are usually circular in shape and multi-tiered colourful arrangements of flowers, petals and leaves. Use of powder colours, desiccated coconut or artificial flowers is prohibited. Pookalams are normally laid on the front court yard of the house. Idols of Mahabali and Vishnu are placed in the center of the Pookalam and worshiped. Diameter of a Pookalam normally ranges from four to five meters.
Ritual of making the flower mats continues for all ten days of Onam. Designing starts from the day of Atham and is made ready by Thiruvonam day. Basic design is prepared on the first day. Size of a Pookalam is increased by adding more to it on every passing day hence a massive Pookalam gets ready for the main day of the occasion. Its a big creative task, as designers have to think of a new design ever day.
Various flowers are used on each day as a specific flower is dedicated to each day of Onam. Commonly used flowers include Thumba (Lucas Aspera), Kakka Poovu, Thechipoovu, Mukkutti (little tree plant), Chemparathy (shoe flower), Aripoo or Konginipoo (Lantana), Hanuman Kireedom (Red pagoda plant) and Chethi (Ixora). Of all these flowers, Thumba flowers are given more importance in Pookalam as they are small in size and glitter in the the soft rays of the sun. 'Thumba Poo' is also considered to be the favourite flower of Lord Shiva and King Mahabali was a devout worshipper of Shiva.
On the next day of Onam, Thumba flowers are used to decorate Onapookalam. The arrangement is not touched for the next 15 days. On the 15 th day, called 'Ayilyam', Pookalam is decorated again. On the next day, called Magam, Pookalam is given a cut in its four corners with a knife. This marks the end of Pookalam decorations for the year. Some also follow the tradition of erecting a small pandal over the completed flower carpet and decorating it with colourful festoons.
Making of Pookalam is itself a colourful and joyous event. Being a team effort it helps to generate feeling of togetherness and goodwill amongst the people. It is animating to watch women as they prepare Pookalam while singing traditional songs. Giggling and sharing jokes between the thought provoking and back breaking job.
Trends
Earlier, people used to make efforts to collect flowers for designing a Pookalam. Children used to get up early in the morning and gather flowers in their small 'Pookuda' (basket) from the village gardens. These days, the trend has changed and people have the option of buying flowers from the market in the shape and colour of their choice.
Pookalam decoration competitions are organised by various societies and groups all over the state on the day of Onam. They have become extremely popular and witness huge public participations. Big prizes are also kept in these contests as they have turned up to be extremely competitive events. A large number of people assemble just to have a look at the innovative and meticulously prepared art pieces.
A beautiful design, though it is said, is created in the heart, use of technology is also in vogue in designing of a Pookalam. People prepare design first on computer and then implement it on floor. This saves a lot of time and energy and helps the designers to come up with stunning Pookalams.

Hi all,

High-spirited people of Kerala celebrate Onam with gaiety and fervor. The festival is celebrated for a period of ten days, starting from the first day Atham and continuing till tenth and the biggest day called Thiru Onam. The spectacular festival attracts thousands of tourists from across the country and globe. Immense popularity of the festival is further promoted by the Government of India by celebrating Kerala Tourism Week during the time of Onam.
Beginning of the Celebrations
Celebrations of the first day are marked by intricate floral carpets called Pookalam. More flowers of different colours are added to this pookalam on each passing day. Girls take great delight in designing them in the front courtyards of their house. Boys take pleasure in helping them gather flowers. Special prayers are also said on Atham in a local temple. Hectic activities for the carnival begin in the state from this day onwards.
Celebrations on Thiru Onam
The biggest and the most happening day in the carnival of Onam is Thiruvonam. Festivities begin as early as 4 am. People clean up their house, take early bath, wear new clothes and perform elaborate prayers to seek divine blessings. People of Kerala are extremely passionate about this. Even if they cannot easily afford, they will anyhow prepare the meal inclusive of all the 11-13 prescribed dishes. Activities, Events and Recreation
There are a lot of activities that takes place all over the state on Onam. Pulikali performers paint themselves in the guise of a tiger and enact hunting scenes to entertain people. Tenkasi
Tenkasi is a town and a municipality in Tirunelveli district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is located in the foothills of the Western Ghats near the Courtallam Waterfalls.
Tenkasi (South Kasi) is famous for its Ulagamman Temple and its Shiva Temple. The Ulagamman temple was built by Parakrama Pandian, but was shattered by lightning. In the 1990s, the temple was reinstated with the help of Sivanthi Adithan and others, and it was painted again in 2006 by the same group for a new look. However, the first few feet from the ground is not painted as that part is supposed to have survived the lightning strike. The gopuram or the entering gateway is supposed to be one of the highest in the southern state of Tamil Nadu. The main deity at this temple is Kasi Viswanathar (Shiva). This temple has the uniqueness of having three Sannidhis, Sivan Sannidhi, Amman Sannidhi and Murugan Sannidhi. This temple has beautiful sculptures and also has musical stone pillars, that emit metallic sounds of different pitch when tapped with fingers. The entrance is so gigantic with heavy steps. One could view the majestic Temple Gopuram View when we enter Tenkasi. The entrance Gopuram of the temple will welcome the pilgrims with the pleasant cool breeze which waves through from Thirikooda Malai.
Tenkasi also boasts of another magnificent temple, Kulasekaranathar Temple, which has been in closed state for a few hundred years. It also has a temple pond in middle of the town, adjoining the Kannimaramman Temple. There are a row of houses along the Kannimariamman Temple, famous are the Justice and Advocate villas, such as Kuttalingam Pillai's residence.
Opposite to the main Kasi Visvanathar temple, there is a point selling Halwa (a wheat based sweet edible gel product) is available.
Tenkasi has 2 bus stands and a railway station. Now there is almost daily trains (Podhigai Express) which runs from Chennai to Tenkasi.
There is also Thenmalai (Honey Mountain) presence of many combs in the area, well know for a great lake and adventure trips.
Tenkasi is also famous for saral (drizzling). During May-August every year, people enjoy saral in Tenkasi.
The main tourist attraction of Tenkasi is Courtallam, with its exotic waterfalls and healing spas.
Tenkasi is at the footsteps of Thirikooda Malai (Thiri koodal means the joining of three - it is the convergence of three mountains) - a picturesque place. The famed Thirikooda Rasappa Kavirayar hailed from this area.
